Matanzas Postal Forgery -- Falso postal de MatanzasThese forgeries were made to defraud the post office presumably by a postal clerk in Matanzas who apparently bought some stamps surcharged with the Y 1/4 in Havana, erased the surcharge as best possible, and then disguised the erased surcharges by cancelling the stamps heavily with a typical Matanzas mute cancel so that the stamps would pass as 2 reales stamps, pocketing a profit of 1 3/4 reales when the clerck sold them at the Matanzas post office.
